News for Indiana aviation accident lawyers- FAA to probe fatal plane crash that killed pilot in Jefferson County, Indiana.

Jefferson County, IN—An elderly and well-known pilot was killed in a tragic aviation accident in western Jefferson County, Indiana on Monday, April 19, 2010. The deadly single-engine plane crash occurred shortly after the aircraft departed from Madison Municipal Airport at approximately 11:30 a.m., according to information provided by WLKY.com.

Reports stated a Piper Comanche 250 light airplane, piloted by 81-year-old Dr. Henry Schirmer Riley, took off from Madison Municipal Airport when the aircraft suddenly turned around as if it were attempting to land but failed in doing so. The plane smashed into the ground and was destroyed on impact. Riley, who reportedly wrote a novel about his journey around the world in the Piper aircraft in 1986, suffered fatal injuries in the plane wreck.

Kenneth Craigmyle, a witness who lives in close proximity to the field in which the plane was downed allegedly stated, “It’s just a pile of metal. The impact was terrible. The engine was clear on the ground… I got there and smelled fuel so I didn’t get very close. I did see a body and I hollered for any survivors but the crash was horrendous—nothing but a pile of metal.”

Indiana State Police (ISP), Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) authorities responded to the scene of the fatal aviation accident and were working on determining what might have caused the fatal aviation accident. Investigations are underway.
