Greensboro, NC—Officials believe that falling ceiling plaster is the reason why emergency crews had to rush two workers to a hospital on Wednesday, May 26, 2010. The two workers were injured while at University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNGC) Mary Foust Resident Hall, located at 301 College Ave., as reported by the Greensboro News-Record.
UNCG Capt. Paul Lester said, “They had some plaster fall from the ceiling, and that how I believe they got hurt.” The workers were reportedly in a bathroom area when the first-floor stucco ceiling material fell.
When the injured construction workers left the construction site at about 3:00 p.m., the unidentified workers were reportedly conscious. Officials stated that the workers suffered non-life threatening injuries. Other reports indicated that the workers were treated for leg and back injuries.
Clean Air Environmental apparently employs the injured demolition workers.
It has not been determine what caused the stucco to fall. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to arrive at the scene to conduct a full investigation.
UNCG’s website stated that the construction project included refurbishing bathrooms, replacing windows, installing a new sprinkler system and upgrading the existing fire alarm system.
