London – Scientists have discovered that salmonella can initiate a cancer cell killing immune response. As reported by Reuters, researchers suggest the finding may lead to the creation of injectable cancer killing cells for patients with tumors.

Maria Rescigno of European Institute of Oncology in Milan, who is connected to the study, is quoted in the report as stating in a telephone interview of the research findings, “We did experiments first in mice and then in cancer cells and immune cells from human patients, and found that the salmonella was doing exactly the same job… Now we are ready to go into (testing on) humans, but we are waiting for authorization.”

More information about the study may be available in the Science Translational Medicine journal.
