Chicago, IL — One construction worker is battling for his life after he fell down a hole on Thursday, April 21, 2011 in southwest suburban Chicago. The construction accident occurred just after 7:30 a.m., at the Calumet Water Reclamation District Plant, at 400 E. 130th St., reported CBS News.
According to officials, construction worker Jeff Andrews, 50, was at the top of a ladder when he slipped and fell about 20 feet onto his co-worker, who was at the bottom.
Chicago Fire Commissioner Robert Hoff described, “One was at the top of the ladder (and) slipped. It was very muddy back there. It was clay; it was very slippery…He slipped and took a fall down the ladder. He just grazed off the other individual.”
Responding emergency crews used a “stoke” basket to help lift the two injured men out of the muddy hole.
Andrews was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn for treatment of serious head injuries. Doctors are waiting to perform surgery, because they want his condition to stabilize.
The second injured co-worker was also hospitalized, but his identity and injuries were not reported.
Investigations are underway.
