Lakeland, FL — A school bus struck a 13-year-old girl, leaving her dead, Tuesday afternoon, January 17, 2012. The fatal school bus accident occurred just after 3 p.m. at the intersection of W. Beacon Road and Eden Parkway in Lakeland, reported Bay News 9.
Lakeland Police reported that the school bus was making a left-hand turn onto W. Beacon Road from a stop sign when the bus hit the 13-year-old girl.
The girl was crossing W. Beacon Road southbound from Camphor Drive when she was hit.
Responding emergency crews airlifted the girl to Tampa General Hospital, where her injuries proved fatal and she was pronounced dead about an hour and half later.
None of the 20 to 30 students on the bus from Southwest Elementary were injured in the crash.
The bus driver, Virginia Robinson, 43, is said to be “torn up over the accident,” according to school officials.
Investigations into the school bus accident are underway. It is unknown if Robinson is facing any charges.
