Allentown, PA– At least six people are still unaccounted for following a natural gas explosion in eastern Pennsylvania on Wednesday, February 9, 2011. The 10:45 p.m. blast leveled two houses, sparked a fire that burned for over seven hours and prompted the evacuation of hundreds of residents, as reported by the Houston Chronicle.

Officials reported that the cause of the massive explosion is still unclear.

Two of the missing people resided in one of the two-story row houses that blew up in the downtown residential neighborhood.

The blast sparked a fire that engulfed an entire row of homes that burned for hours. Fire officials predicted the blast and fire destroyed eight houses and damaged another 16 homes.

Because of the packed layers of snow and ice, utility crews had problems digging to the ruptured underground gas line that was fueling the fire.

Officials evacuated 500 to 600 people and took them to a Jewish community center and an agriculture hall while crews worked through the night.

Investigations into the explosion are underway.
