University Place, WA—One worker is lucky to be alive after being sucked down a Pierce County public works sewer pipe on Monday, March 22, 2011. The Coluccio Construction worker was conducting an inspection when he became disconnected from his safety harness, reported King5.com.

According to officials, the 37-year-old worker went down into an 85-foot-deep shaft to do an inspection, when his safety harness somehow became disconnected and he slipped into the sludge inside of the sewer system.

The man was swept down the sewer about 3,500 feet, which is about three quarters of a mile downstream. The worker finally came to a stop in a 4-foot sewer pipe with less than 18-inches of breathing room as 15,000 gallons of waste water per minute rushed around him. He was then able to move himself into a bend in the line after being trapped about half an hour in raw sewage in the pitch black dark.

Rescue crews were able to pull him from the pipe and to safety. He sustained a split lip and a broken tooth during the whole ordeal.

L&I is investigating the work-related accident.
