Fort Dodge, IA — Two construction workers were injured in a bridge collapse on Highway 169 over Second Avenue Monday morning, April 25, 2011. The bridge fell about 20 feet at around 8:30 a.m., reported KCCI.

Fort Dodge fire officials stated that the construction workers were starting to remove part of the deck on the bridge when it collapsed. Two workers were standing on the deck when it fell, injuring them.

“Looks like there was some failure in the bridge and it brought down the bridge with the excavator on the bridge deck itself at the time… We don’t really know what happened but it looks like that maybe had some unequal loading on the remainder, on the rest of the bridge,” said Dennis Ward, a DOT construction supervisor said to WCCI.

One worker sustained a cut on his forehead, while the other sustained a wrist injury in the construction accident.

Responding emergency crews transported the workers to a local hospital for treatment.

The injured workers are reportedly employed by Minnowa Construction Inc., of Harmony, Minn.

It was not reported if the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) would be investigating the construction accident.
