San Francisco, CA — An accident involving a tram used on Alcatraz Island injured two people, who were hit in the head and face by the roof of the tram that partially collapsed on the sightseers. The accident occurred just after 1:30 p.m., which involved a tram for visitors with mobility problems or those who wish not to make the 1,300-foot walk from the ferry to the main cell house, reported KTVU.
According to Alcatraz Cruises spokeswoman Tegan Firth, the golf cart-style tram was carrying passengers when it hit a pipe that was sticking out from a wall along the roadway. The pipe caused the front part of the tram’s roof to collapse onto the passengers.
Two passengers, identified as 64-year-old Peggy Kuykendall of Houston and 41-year-old Scott Guidry of San Francisco, were injured as a result of the accident.
Guidry reportedly suffered a gash to his head, while Kuykendall was hit in the eye. As a precaution responding emergency crews strapped the victims to a backboard and an Alcatraz ferry brought them back to shore. An ambulance then transported the victims to San Francisco General for further treatment. Their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.
Investigators say it is still too early to tell if the driver was at fault.
Investigations are ongoing.
