According to the National Domestic Workers Alliance, an organization founded by the U.S. Social Forum to improve the living and working conditions of domestic workers, there are over 200,000 household workers in the New York Metropolitan area. Household Hiring and Training Expert Marta Perrone provides advice to help these household employees position themselves as professionals and empower them to catapult their careers by making themselves more marketable to employers, increasing their knowledge of how to successfully complete all household tasks, and communicating more effectively with employers. “After many years of owning my household staffing agency, I know where training and career development skills falter and with the proper knowledge, domestic workers can gain the confidence needed to become professionals,” says Perrone who owned Domestic Connection, a leading Los Angeles-based agency, for over 20 years.
Perrone, who emigrated from Spain to the U.S. with her parents at a young age, understands the plight of immigrants, many of whom are domestic workers and are struggling to establish themselves in this country. In her books and DVD, “The Professional Housekeeper Career Guide” and “The Professional Housekeeper Training Guide,” Perrone empowers household workers to create lucrative careers and succeed in the household industry. The expert offers these tips to help domestic workers become more marketable to potential employers and remain employed in this challenging economy:
• “Distinguish yourself from other household workers by having knowledge of all aspects of homemaking which include cleaning, laundry, organization, basic childcare, shopping, and cooking;
• Request formal job descriptions and household manuals so that you are clear on what your employer expects of you;
• Exemplify professional behavior by being honest, punctual and reliable;
• Keep an open line of communication by voicing concerns to your employer in a formal meeting and accepting constructive criticism.”
More tips and procedures can be found in Perrone’s training guides, which provide the necessary tools to become a professional nanny, housekeeper, household/estate manager and companion to the elderly. The author provides details on job descriptions and how to qualify, creating an impressive resume, interview techniques, basic childcare, housekeeping and laundry training, basic cooking, first aid and emergency procedures, and more. Her training guides are also informative for those who are interested in running their homes more efficiently. A portion of proceeds from Perrone’s products benefit the Children’s Burn Foundation.
On Saturday, June 4th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Perrone will host “The Professional Housekeeper Training Seminar” in San Francisco. Perrone will provide in-person training and certification at the Hilton Garden Inn Burlingame.
