Lawrence Township, NJ — Rescue crews have recovered the body of a man who was swept into a Mercer County sewer line late Tuesday night, August 30, 2011. The accident took place around 2:15 p.m., near the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Lawrence Township, reported 6ABC.com.
According to police, the owner of a landscaping business, Shemin Nurseries, was trying to drain flood water from his property when he opened a man hole and was swept into a 40-inch sewer line.
Two other people were almost sucked into the drain, but other workers were able to grab them and pull them to safety.
The victim was pulled into the sewer pipe by the fast-moving water, which carried him to the city’s sewer plant two miles away. Rescue crews used cameras in several spots in hopes of locating the man who may have found an air pocket in the pipe.
His body was recovered at 10:00 p.m. that night.
“No one should be opening any manhole covers to drain water, it’s not an appropriate method of releasing water. There’s a whole host of reasons why you’re not supposed to do that,” Lawrence Township Police Chief Daniel Posluszny said to 6ABC.
Investigations into the sewer accident are underway. The identity of the victim is being withheld at this time.
