The news that Twitter has 100m active users, averages 230m tweets a day and has 400m monthly browsers of its website will be welcome news to marketers who have long integrated Twitter into their PR campaigns; but those still unsure of the social media channel should act fast to get ahead of their competitors warns tech PR agency, Punch Communications.

“Understanding the purpose and benefits of Twitter has been difficult for many businesses to comprehend particularly as the channel arrived on the tailgates of Facebook and many felt it difficult to differentiate between the two”, explains Georgina Dunkley account director at SEO agency, Punch Communications.

“Twitter has now reported that it expects to see an increase of 26m over the next year, the same growth it saw from 2006-2009, which indicates that the channel is not only becoming more popular with consumers but with business users too. For any successful business to consumer or business to business PR campaign to effectively work therefore, there now needs to be a social media element included, the growth in popularity of social media agencies is testament to that.”

Businesses can simply register a user-name via twitter.com and through the search function, can begin following Tweeters who have a shared interest in their product or service. Being a successful Tweeter is something of a long game and to encourage followers and @mentions, businesses should avoid being overtly salesy and instead encourage interesting and lively debate, share imagery and news and retweet followers which they think are noteworthy.

Georgina added: “There are a number of useful ‘getting started’ and ‘making the most of Twitter’ guides available on the internet and so my advice to any Twitter novice is to read up before you start to tweet.”
