Hilo, HI — A fatal work-related accident left one man dead and another seriously injured on Hawaii’s Big Island as they were testing a zip line. The fatal accident occurred on Wednesday, September 21, 2011, at a zip line facility just outside of Hilo, reported CNN.
A 36-year-old man from Maui was reportedly about halfway across the 2,300-foot zip line—above a rocky stream—when one of the towers holding up an end of the line collapsed. The worker fell 200 feet into the stream bed, where he was pronounced dead.
Another worker was also injured, who identified as a 35-year-old Ohio man. He fell about 30 feet from the collapsing tower. He was rushed to Hilo Medical Center by responding emergency crews where he is listed in critical condition.
The victim’s employer, Experiential Resources Inc. of Maui, reported that the victims were working on a new course when the accident occurred.
The owner of the zip line, Lava Hotline, has closed all its zip lines pending an investigation.
As CNN reported, “The course is being shut down for the next two weeks while we do an inspection and make sure that everything is totally safe,” company owner Gary Marrow was quoted as saying. “It’s been a really difficult day.”
Investigations into the fatal work-related accident are underway.
