40 Vehicles Crash in New Orleans—2 Dead, 59 Injured

New Orleans, LA — A massive pile-up claimed the lives of two men and injured 59 others just before dawn on Interstate 10 in eastern New Orleans. The automobile accident occurred around 4 a.m. Thursday, December 29, 2011, which shut down the interstate through rush hour and beyond, Fox News reports.

The massive vehicle pileup, which consisted of about 40 vehicles, occurred on the westbound lanes.

Responding emergency crews transported 22 people to hospitals for treatment of minor to critical injuries, while another 37 people refused medical attention for minor injuries.

Two people were killed in the crash. The identities of the deceased are being withheld at this time, but they are said to be male.

It’s unknown what caused the crashes at this time, but investigations are ongoing.
