Burlington, Ontario — Three people were killed and dozens were injured when a Canadian Via Rail passenger train derailed Sunday, February 26, 2012. The deadly train accident occurred in Burlington, around 3:30 p.m. near Aldershot station, reported the New York Daily News.

There were about 75 people on board the train, which was traveling from Niagara Falls to Toronto when the train derailed.

According to reports, three engineers riding in the cab of the locomotive at the front of the train were killed when it derailed. A fourth Via worker in the locomotive sustained injuries in the accident, along with 45 passengers.

The locomotive reportedly came to a rest on its side after crashing into a small trackside building. At least two passenger cars also derailed into a L-shape behind the locomotive. In total, six cars derailed.

Responding emergency crews airlifted three passengers, in which one suffered a heart attack, another suffered a broken leg and the third passenger sustained a back injury.

The remaining 42 injured passengers were either treated at the scene, or taken to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the fatal train accident.
