Last month Great Grandmaster Tae Yun Kim announced the results of a student testing ceremony held on February 9th, 2012 at the Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy. The event gave students of all ages the opportunity to showcase the skills they’ve learned, while also giving them the chance to graduate to the next rank in their belt standings.
A few weeks earlier black belt students participated in a similar testing session held in the academy’s training hall on the night of January 23rd. Some of the more notable occurrences of that night included performances from Johnathon F. and Edward M., both of whom were able to graduate to Chief Master 6th degree black belt. Tae Yun Kim says these students in particular were especially impressive to watch throughout their progression as martial artists, as both of them have dealt with significant physical hardships.
Johnathon F. has been paralyzed below the waist since a young age, and although he has held an interest martial arts for a long time, he was also somewhat discouraged about beginning training, given his physical limitations. After a few years of attending classes and watching from the sidelines, he decided to participate, and since then has advanced tremendously with the help of the Jung SuWon Martial Arts Academy.
Edward M. is an older gentlemen who has been training consistently for decades, but has had to cope with severe joint pain caused by arthritis, as well as several other health issues. He displayed the level of physical and mental resolve he has developed by excelling in all of the testing tasks, including breaking a large stack of bricks. Despite physical ailments that would cause most other men his age to stay home and live a sedentary lifestyle, Edward has been able to generate a tremendous amount of inner strength by heeding the teachings of the Jung Suwon Martial Arts Academy.
Tae Yin Kim believes that the challenges these students overcome provide proof that martial arts is more than just a physical artform, as it requires great mental and emotional dedication. He also notes that the skills and principles learned as a student at the academy can not only be used in combat situations, but can also be applied to nearly every facet of life. “The patience, discipline, knowledge and and physical/mental strength one develops through years of martial arts training can contribute to a better quality of life for anyone” Dr. Kim says.
