North Carolina – A law student fell into a sinkhole while driving near the campus of Duke University, where he attends school. As reported by ABC News, Rajiv Thairani, 27, was driving by a fast food restaurant in his girlfriend’s vehicle Tuesday afternoon, when he ran into the sinkhole that was reportedly eight feet deep.
Thairani is quoted in the report as stating of the incident, “I was going to use the lot to turn around so I just turned into it and my car is relatively low to the ground and the hole wasn’t visible from the street… My initial reaction was that the ground underneath me had given way, like it had collapsed.”
He is further quoted as stating of a similar incident with a previous driver, “This apparently happened to someone the night before, to a truck driver… His tires got stuck but his truck [an 18-wheeler] was too big to go in. They called 911 and put up caution tape and poles but by the next day the caution tape had blown away and poles had fallen over so it was no longer visible.”
The vehicle has to be removed from the sinkhole with a wrecker. Thairani was purportedly not injured in the incident.
