Hattiesburg, MS—A single-vehicle crash, which involved a prison transport van, left one person dead, and several others seriously injured. The fatal crash happened on Sunday, September 6, 2009 around 7:00 a.m. along I-59 less than one mile north of Hardy Street, as reported by the Clarion Ledger.
According to police reports, the prison transport van operated by Prison Transport Services, carrying prisoners from Texas and Louisiana to several different detention centers along the East Coast, went off the right shoulder of I-59, hit an embankment, careened through several trees and landed on its roof. The van was transporting three guards, which included the driver, and nine prisoners. All of the passengers reportedly had to be cut from the badly damaged van. The 50-year-old driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash by responding emergency medical services (EMS) crews. A security guard and six prisoners were transported by area EMS personnel to a local hospital for treatment of their injuries sustained in the crash. According to medical professionals, a guard and two prisoners are currently in critical condition, as of Sunday. One prisoner has reportedly been released from the hospital, and is being held at Forrest County Regional Jail. Investigators are still conducting a full investigation into the fatal single-vehicle accident.
