A Long Island bus driver was charged with a DWI, among other charges, after he crashed a mini-school bus that was carrying five children into a house Wednesday, October 3, 2012, explains New York City auto accident attorney Jonathan C Reiter. According to reports, the driver was charged with driving while intoxicated, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment.
According to Nassau County Police reports, 66-year-old Frederick Flowers plowed through the garage door of a single-family home in Long Island as he transported children on their way home from St. Edward the Confessor elementary school. Mr. Flowers was transported by helicopter to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. He remained hospitalized Thursday as the charges came through.
The kids, aged 5, 6, 8, 9 and 9 years old, were not physically injured.
“It’s appalling that an individual responsible for children in Nassau County would be driving while intoxicated,” stated Det. Vincent Garcia, a Nassau County Police spokesman.
Mr. Flowers was suspended from his job at First Student, a Freeport-based bus company after the incident, and awaits a full internal investigation.
The five counts of aggravated DWI are felonies under Leandra’s Law.
