Channelling the traditional colours and patterns of Central Asia, Y-3’s autumn/winter 2012-13 collection takes wearers on an inspirational journey alongside the area’s nomadic tribes.
Debuted at New York Fashion Week in front of an audience that included Idris Elba, Isabel Lucas, Anton Yelchin and Mary Charteris, Y-3’s latest collection explores the ways in which ancient nomadic tribes are able to combine their traditional ethnic dress with contemporary sports clothing, influenced by Western travellers who visit the region.
To keep wearers warm for winter, designer Yohji Yamamoto created shearling jackets, long woollen coats and knitted fleeces, all combined with eye-catching leopard prints. The collection is about comfort and style, as much as protection from the harsh winter elements. Billowing ponchos and capes are complemented by chunky knitted jumpers and shirts with removable felt collars and cuffs.
And that is not all, as the beautiful designs are reinforced for winter using the breakthrough W-181 heat-trapping fabric that has previously been used by NASA.
Y-3 is a collaboration between Yamamoto and established sports brand Adidas and the designer is known for his exaggerated silhouettes and use of contrasting textures.
Yamamoto stated: “There is poetry and elegance to the way nomads dress. I want to capture that feeling and make it modern.”
Fahad Siddiqui said: “Y-3’s collection embodies the spirit of traditional nomadic life in Central Asia and ethnic prints are combined with the most modern heat-trapping technology to produce clothing that truly delivers on both style and practicality for winter.
