Lifeguard who saved Hurricane Sandy victims killed in accident

Puerto Rico – A lifeguard regarded as a hero for helping save victims during Hurricane Sandy has been killed in an accident. As reported by UPI, Dylan Smith of New York, died in a surfing accident in Puerto Rico and was found floating near his surf board on Sunday, according to a family friend.

New York Fire Department Chief Michael Light is quoted in the report as stating of the accident, “The same sport — the sport of surfing — that he used to save all those people, it’s so shocking that he perished that way.”

Smith was previously honored in People magazine’s Dec. 6 issue for saving six people during Hurricane Sandy in October, after being name one of the publication’s “2012 Heroes of the Year.”
