Excess Baggage Company has secured a deal to operate ten bag weighing machines across Ireland’s major airports. There are now seven machines at Dublin, one at Shannon, and two at Cork airports.

The stand-alone machines offer detailed information on airline baggage restrictions and calculate the excess baggage charges from the departure airport, as well as the charges for any ongoing connecting flights. They conveniently accept three different currencies; US Dollars, Euros and GBP. The coin-operated machines are timely as many airlines increase their excess baggage charges.

The new units can also be used to provide passengers with additional information on other concierge services from Excess Baggage Company available at the airports, such as wrapping and bag shipping, fast-track services, lounge access or hotel reservations. Using the weighing machines and their wide range of complimentary services, passengers can send home their excess luggage or have it shipped to their destination.

“Ireland is ‘the birthplace of the UK’s budget airlines’ and the weighing machines are proving a hit with customers who want to keep a close check on the weight of their luggage and the costs they are likely to incur if they go over their limit,” said David Elliott of Excess Baggage Company.

DAA’s Head of Retail Concessions Andrew Baker, said: ‘Excess Baggage are offering a service which will help to make the passenger experience at our airports even better. We are delighted with the take-up on these machines so far, and they are proving to be a sound commercial proposition at our airports.’

The deal is valued at over £1 million GBP for the duration of the contract.
