Coopertown, Tennessee – A Tennessee police chief, hired following a series of issues within his department, is using lie detector tests in an attempt to identify racist job applicants. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Coopertown Police Chief Shane Sullivan expressed the belief that the tests may discourage some applicants grouped in this category from applying altogether.
The rural community of approximately 4,000, 95 percent of whom are reportedly white, has been subjected to controversy over allegations of racism in recent years.
Although some are skeptical about the use of the tests, some suggest it could be a step in the right direction.
Carolyn Murray, a professor of psychology at the University of California Riverside, is quoted by the AP as stating of Sullivan, “If he’s making this effort, he’s making the biggest effort I’ve seen to date… You’re not going to get everybody, but you will be able to stop a few people who would have been able to do a lot of damage to citizens.”
