Los Angeles – A federal judge has ruled that California’s prisons remain too crowded after assertions were made by the governor that steps have been taken to adequately reduce the state’s prison population in accordance with a court order. As reported by Reuters, U.S. District Court Judge Lawrence Karlton wrote in his 68-page opinion Friday that the goals outlined in the order had not been met by the state and that conditions for inmates would not likely be improved if there was no court oversight.

California Governor Jerry Brown requested that the court order be vacated in January, purporting that the overcrowding problem had been addressed.

Karlton is quoted by Reuters as writing in his decision, “based on defendants’ conduct to date, the court cannot rely on their averments of good faith.”
