Birmingham, Alabama – Civil rights groups in the South expressed disappointment Tuesday over a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down a portion of the Voting Rights Act. As reported by Reuters, the court’s decision ended the enforcement of requirements for some states and localities to obtain federal government approval prior to changing their voting laws, prompting calls for new legislation to ward off voter discrimination.

Scott Douglas, executive director of Greater Birmingham Ministries in Alabama, is quoted in the report as stating of the issue, “The Supreme Court has given license and permission to go full speed ahead in the prevention of voter registration of African-Americans and Latinos.”

The Supreme Court’s decision enabled Texas to immediately move forward with a controversial law requiring voters to show government-issued photo identification in order to cast a ballot.
