Trenton, N.J. — Leaving the scene of a boating accident could come with new penalties as New Jersey lawmakers are considering tougher legislation, Newsworks New Jersey reports.
The legislation follows a boating accident in 2008 in Barnegat Bay when a speedboat collided with another vessel.
“The man that hit us and left us to drown, he got a $25 fine and that was it,” Bonnie Post said Tuesday, whose husband was killed in the 2008 accident. “I’m not sure that’s any incentive for him to never do that again.”
Under current laws, New Jersey doesn’t have a specific punishment for failing to report a boating accident.
The proposed bill, which has moved forward by the Senate Law and Public Safety Committee, will make the offense a third-degree crime that carries a punishment of five years in prison. If a death resulted from the accident and failed to report it, the death would be punishable by up to 10 years in jail.
