Michigan – A Michigan high school has banned postgame prayer led by students at football games following a complaint filed by the American Civil Liberties Union. As reported by The Oakland Press, the complaint was initiated after a family brought concerns to the ACLU about Lahser High School’s football coach, Dan Loria, allegedly leading prayers after home games.
Bloomfield Schools Superintendent Robert Glass is quoted in the report as stating of investigating the issue, “We interviewed the coach after receiving the complaint and investigated the matter… The coach did not lead prayer as alleged, but was present when students led prayer at the game.”
Glass is further quoted in the report as stating of the decision to not allow even student led prayer after the games, “Student-led prayer is not to be part of post-game proceedings.”
Dan Korobkin, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, purports the issue was with the administration’s reaction as opposed to participation by the coach. Korobin is quoted as stating, “Rather than having some sort of big dispute over whether the coach was actually leading it or taking part, the school district did the right thing by making it clear to the coach that prayer was not appropriate at football team events.”
