Maryland – US Army Pfc Bradley Manning has been acquitted of aiding the enemy, but convicted on 20 other charges. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), on Tuesday, a judge found Manning, 25, guilty on 20 of the 22 counts he was facing including charges of espionage and theft.
Manning could receive up to 136 years in prison if maximum sentencing is imposed.
David Coombs, Manning’s attorney, is quoted by the AP as stating of the judge’s decision, “We won the battle, now we need to go win the war…Today is a good day, but Bradley is by no means out of the fire.”
There have been a mixed views on the possible implications Manning’s case will have on investigative journalism and leak cases.
Steven Aftergood of the Federation of American Scientists is quoted by the AP as stating, “Most journalists are not in the business of publishing classified documents, they’re in the business of reporting the news, which is not the same thing…This is not good news for journalism, but it’s not the end of the world, either.”
