St. Petersburg, Russia – President Barack Obama sat down with Russian civil society activists following the Group of 20 summit on Friday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), some of the activists said Friday that Obama made assurances that he would keep pushing for respect for human rights in Moscow during the hour and a half long meeting.
Obama is quoted by the AP as stating, “The kinds of activities that are represented here are critically important to Russia’s development and I’m very proud of their work… I think it’s important to remember that in every country, here in Russia, in the United States, around the globe, that part of good government is making sure that we’re creating space for civil society to function.”
Yana Yakovleva, head of business advocacy group Business Solidarity, who said the meeting with the US president was “open and sincere,” is further quoted as stating, “His main message was that there’s a lot of differences between the two great powers, and that while deciding which issue to raise they have to weigh carefully the impact it may have on relations on the whole.”
