Atlanta – A former teacher has pleaded guilty after being indicted on charges linked to a test-cheating scandal in the Atlanta public school system. As reported by Reuters, Lisa Terry, who is one of 35 educators indicted in the case, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of obstruction on Wednesday becoming the first to be convicted.
Terry, who received 12 months probation for her sentence, admitted to encouraging students to change answers they had incorrect on a standardized test. She is quoted as stating in her letter of apology to the court, “I directed students to go back and check their work, which allowed them to make corrections on their answers.”
Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard is quoted by Reuters as stating of the matter, “The truth is finally out… There was, in fact, cheating going on in the Atlanta Public School system.”
In addition to probation Terry was also ordered to pay $500 in restitution and perform community service.
