Paris – The founder of a breast implant company accused of producing faulty implants has been sentenced to prison. As reported by Reuters, Jean-Claude Mas, 74, received a four-year prison sentence on Tuesday after purportedly hiding information about the silicone used to produce the implants sold by his company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP).
Four other executives also received jail sentences and fines.
France announced in 2011 that women who had the implants have them removed due to the associated high rupture rate. A reported 300,000 women across the globe had been sold the implants.
The company was closed down in 2010. A number of legal cases are pending in connection to injuries sustained by the faulty implants.
