Texas – A lawsuit alleges that Carnival Cruise Lines knew of the fire risks prior to the ill-fated cruise in February during which the Triumph ship lost power. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), documents filed Tuesday by Carnival Cruise Lines in a Miami federal court claim a compliance report sent one month prior to the Triumph’s departure on Feb. 7 recommended the installation of spray shields engines’ flexible fuel hoses.

The fire, which occurred on Feb. 10 was sparked from a leak on engine hose No. 6. No physical injuries were sustained in the incident; however, 4,000 cruise ship passengers were subjected to a nightmarish ordeal prior to the ship docking in Mobile, Ala. days later.

Frank Spagnoletti, a Houston attorney who represents some of the passengers, stated on Tuesday that the cruise line had been negligent in maintaining the ship.

Spagnoletti is quoted by the AP as stating, “It was unbelievable to me that you would take 4,000 people and put them in a situation of basically Russian roulette… Basically every time that vessel went out they never knew whether they were going to have a fire or not.”
