Ohio – A new Ohio law has become effective to help alert police about suspects who have a history of violence and mental illness. As reported by The Columbus Dispatch, a new document devised by the Ohio Supreme Court, Form 95, must now be filled out by judges and submitted to police to be entered into a national database on crime if a violent offender has been ordered by a court to undergo an evaluation or treatment for mental illness.

As noted in the report, the database can only be accessed by law enforcement agencies. It will also reportedly only include names of entrants beginning on the day the law went into effect this week.

Clark County Sheriff Gene Kelly is quoted in the report as stating of the database, “Having that information is power… It allows us to more properly diagnose a situation.”
