Texas – Several advocacy groups including Planned Parenthood presented arguments to a federal court on Monday seeking to ease restrictions of a controversial Texas abortion law. As reported by Reuters, the current appeal is being heard by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals court in Louisiana, which in October reinstated a restriction blocked by a lower court.
In accordance with provisions of the new law, doctors must have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of a clinic where an abortion is to be performed. It also led to the suspension of services for dozens of abortion clinics in the state.
Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott is quoted as saying of the restrictions in a statement, “These are common sense, and perfectly constitutional, regulations that further the state’s interest in protecting the health and safety of Texas women.”
Whole Women’s Health Chief Executive Amy Hagstrom Miller, who is an abortion advocate, is quoted as stating of the law, “Nobody took away a woman’s right to make the decision but if she’s unable to exercise that right because of lack of access then it’s actually meaningless.”
