California – Jurors began their deliberations last week in the case of two former police officers accused of police brutality. As reported by Reuters, the high profile trial of former Fullerton police officers Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli has lasted for a month.

The two were charged in connection with the 2011 death of a mentally ill homeless man, who was beaten to death after officers approached him to question him about reports of vandalized cars. Video surveillance of the encounter led to protests in Fullerton.

Lawyers for the defense argued that Thomas posed a threat and had resisted arrest. Prosecutors say the homeless man was not armed.

Ramos, who was charged with second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter, faces up to 15 years if convicted. Cicinelli was charged with involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force and could receive up to four years in prison.
