Oregon – An Oregon elementary school has done away with a policy that requires kids to pay for additional restroom breaks. As reported by ABC News Blogs, teachers at Cascades Elementary School were accused by some parents of punishing children who needed to use the restroom outside of scheduled breaks.
The use of “Super Pro” bucks, or fake money that could be applied for additional bathroom breaks or purchasing trinkets at school was a policy that parents say incentivized holding it in.
Melissa Dalebout, who says her daughter trying to hold in her urine resulted in an accident, is quoted in the report as stating of the school policy to ABC News’ Portland affiliate KATU, “I just feel my children should not be punished for having to use the bathroom, even if they didn’t take advantage of a recess break because they may not have been thinking of it. They’re children.”
Cascades Principal Tami Volz is further quoted as telling KATU, “If a student is chronically leaving the classroom, it becomes an intervention strategy for the teacher … to really encourage them to be in class.”
