Ohio – The execution of an Ohio inmate on Thursday took an unusually long time to be carried out after a new combination of drugs was used. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the execution of convicted killer Dennis McGuire took 25 minutes with the use of the drugs that had never been tried in the U.S.
A lawyer for McGuire’s family says it is planning to file a lawsuit over the issue. Attorneys for McGuire previously made attempts to block his execution with the use of the untried method, stating it would cause him to suffer “agony and terror” related to a medical phenomenon known as air hunger.
McGuire, 53, is stated to have appeared to gasp several times during the execution, making loud snorting noises.
McGuire’s attorney Allen Bohnert is quoted by the AP as stating on Thursday of what he called an “a failed, agonizing experiment,” “The people of the state of Ohio should be appalled at what was done here today in their names.”
A spokeswoman for Ohio prisons has said a review will be conducted pertaining to the circumstances of the execution.
