New York – Five people have been arrested in connection with the 1978 Luftansa heist, a long unsolved crime portrayed in the 1990 Martin Scorsese movie “Goodfellas.” As reported by Reuters, the men, believed to be mobsters, were arrested Thursday after being charged with murder and other crimes.
As noted in the report, the arrests resulted from a search of the home of James “Jimmy the Gent” Burke in New York last summer. Burke, who a character of the film played by Robert Dinero was based on, was suspected to be the main person behind the heist. He died in prison in 1996.
A reported $5 million and $1 million in jewels was taken in the heist, which would have an equivalent value at over $20 million today.
