Chicago – A $3.5 million settlement has been reached in a lawsuit against the Archdiocese of Chicago and Cardinal Francis George over allegations of sex abuse. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, the victim in the case alleged he was abused by then-Rev. Daniel McCormack, who in 2007 pleaded guilty to criminal sexual assault on multiple counts.

The lawsuit filed in 2010, alleged that McCormack was not removed from his position by the Archdiocese of Chicago and Cardinal Francis George in spite of sexual abuse complaints. McCormack was later defrocked and charged with related crimes.

William F. Martin, an attorney for the victim, is quoted in the report as stating, “We are pleased to have reached this settlement because it marks one more step toward bringing justice to the victim and his family.”

Other civil suit cases involving McCormack are reportedly pending.

The Archdiocese of Chicago is quoted as stating in a news release, “The abuse of any child is a crime and a sin. The Archdiocese encourages anyone who has been sexually abused by a priest, deacon, religious or lay employee, to come forward.”
