New Jersey – An attorney for a former Port Authority official says that evidence contradicts statements New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie made about his knowledge of the George Washington Bridge lane closures that occurred in September. As reported by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Lawyer Alan Zegas, who represents David Wildstein, who oversaw the closures, made the assertion in a letter, but did not indicate what the evidence was.
Zegas is quoted as stating in the letter, which requested that the Port Authority cover the legal fees of Wildstein, “Evidence exists … tying Mr. Christie to having knowledge of the lane closures, during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the governor stated publicly in a two-hour news conference.”
Christie fired a deputy chief of staff and an advisor last month over emails that implicated them in a scandal surrounding the lane closures. He is quoted as stating in a news conference on Jan. 9, “I had no knowledge or involvement in this issue, in its planning, or its execution, and I am stunned by the abject stupidity that was shown here…I first found out about it after it was over.”
