Arizona – Republican Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer vetoed a measure that would allow businesses to deny gay people services due to their religious beliefs. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Brewer made the announcement on Wednesday following a firestorm of controversy raised by the passage of Senate Bill 1062 by the GOP-controlled state Legislature.
Brewer is quoted by the AP as stating of the bill, “I have not heard one example in Arizona where a business owner’s religious liberty has been violated… The bill is broadly worded and could result in unintended and negative consequences.”
As noted in the report, the bill was designed to provide protections from lawsuits for people who refuse service to gays based on their religious beliefs. Those who oppose the measure; however, say that it opens the door for discrimination.
Brewer is further quoted as stating in reference to the widespread gay marriage debate, “Our society is undergoing many dramatic changes… However, I sincerely believe that Senate Bill 1062 has the potential to create more problems than it purports to solve. It could divide Arizona in ways we cannot even imagine and nobody could ever want.”
