New York – The terrorism trial of Suleiman Abu Ghaith began in New York on Monday. As reported by Reuters, Abu Ghaith is now one of the highest-profile defendants to face charges of terrorism in the U.S.

Abu Ghaith stands accused of recording videos in Afghanistan on behalf of al Qaeda threatening violence against those in America soon after the terrorist attacks that took place September 11, 2001. Attorneys for the defense claim the government lacks evidence showing Abu Ghaith’s involvement in the alleged plots.

Jury selection is expected to be completed by Wednesday, with opening statements expected to be heard shortly after. The jury in the trial will be kept anonymous.

Abu Ghaith has been charged with conspiring to kill Americans, and conspiracy to provide and providing material support and resources to terrorists. If convicted, he faces a sentence of life in prison.
