Alabama – A judge determined Wednesday that two women who had married in Iowa legally cannot be divorced in Alabama. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Circuit Judge Karen Hall of Huntsville threw out the uncontested divorce of Shrie Michelle Richmond and Kirsten Allysse Richmond citing Alabama’s non-recognition of same-sex marriages.
Attorney Patrick Hill, who represents Shrie Richmond, and says neither of the women wish to relocate in order to have their divorce granted, is quoted by the AP as stating, “They’re both from here in Alabama, and this is where their homes, family and friends are.”
As noted in the report, same-sex marriages are currently recognized in 17 states in the U.S. Other court decisions similar to this one have occurred due to the variations in state laws.
