New York – An increase in the number of food pantries on college campuses in the U.S. has been shown in recent years. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), due to rising tuition costs and other expenses, many colleges and student groups now run food pantries to help the growing number of students who are facing an increased financial load.
Tuition costs at public colleges are stated to have risen in the last five years 27 percent and 14 percent at private institutions.
Nate Smith-Tyge, director of the Michigan State University Food Bank and co-founder of the College and University Food Bank Alliance is quoted by the AP as stating of the numbers, “A lot of schools are coming to the realization that this is important.”
The College and University Food Bank represents a reported 50 college food banks throughout the U.S.
