New York – A British microbiologist and his team may have helped give validity to the long held adage that it’s ok to eat something dropped on the floor, as long as it’s picked up within five-seconds. As reported by The Christian Science Monitor, researchers led by Aston University Prof. Anthony Hilton tested the outcome of eating food-from-the-floor concluding that quickly picking it up after it is dropped does not lead to subsequent vomiting or digestion problems in most cases.
Hilton is quoted in the report as stating, “The findings of this study will bring some light relief to those who have been employing the five-second rule for years, despite a general consensus that it is purely a myth.”
As noted in the report, a 2007 study by researchers at Clemson University concluded the opposite, expressing that contamination of food-on-the-floor occurs immediately.
The British researchers stated; however, that time and the type of flooring are what affect digestibility and bacteria transfer. A poll included in their research also stated that 87 percent of people expressed to be “happy to consume dropped food.”
