Montana – Prosecutors are seeking a life sentence in the case of a woman who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the death of her new husband after he fell off of a cliff. As reported by Reuters, the Montana bride, 22-year-old Jordan Graham, is accused of deliberately shoving Cody Johnson off of a Glacier National Park cliff last year during an argument.
In accordance with a plea agreement, prosecutors dropped the charge of first-degree murder, which carries a mandatory life sentence. A conviction of second-degree murder can carry a lesser prison sentence, but may still be punishable by life.
Graham is set to be sentenced next week. Federal prosecutors described Graham as being an “extremely dangerous, predatory and an unrepentant murderer” in a sentencing recommendation filed on Tuesday, arguing that a 24 to 30 year sentence would be insufficient.
Michael Cotter, U.S. Attorney for Montana is quoted as writing, “The defendant, despite offering no remorse, has left a mother childless, upended a community and shown no respect for the law during this entire process.”
Graham’s federal defender, Michael Donahoe, is seeking a sentence of 10 years for his client. Donahoe is quoted as stating in legal filings, “She is worthy of punishment and the shame that will no doubt accompany her for the remainder of her life… Defendant has confided to the undersigned that a day does not go by that she doesn’t think of her husband and what might have been.”
