Cairo – More than 500 suspected supporters of former President Mohammed Morsi were sentenced to death on Monday by an Egyptian court over a fatal police station attack. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), human rights activist have expressed concern over the outcome of the two-day trial during which defense attorneys were prohibited from presenting their case.
As noted in the report, the government has been conducting mass trials of people who support Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood. An estimated 16,000 people have been arrested since the former president was ousted last year.
Mohammed Zarie, a Cairo-based human rights lawyer, is quoted as stating of the recent verdicts, “It turns the judiciary in Egypt from a tool for achieving justice into an instrument for taking revenge.”
A reported 545 defendants faced charges of murder, attempted murder, and other counts after the attack in August in the town of Matay. Some say the verdicts will likely be overturned on appeal.
