Pittsburgh – A black man who filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against three white police officers accused of falsely arresting him four years ago was awarded $119,000 in damages by a jury on Monday. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), jurors determined that the officers falsely arrested Jordan Miles, now 22, in the 2010 incident, but decided excessive force had not been used as alleged.

Miles maintains he was walking to his grandmother’s when the officers approached him in plain clothes requesting money and other things without identifying who they were. The officers deny that they failed to identify themselves and said they stopped Miles after he appeared to be lurking. After the incident escalated into a physical altercation, Miles was arrested and charged with assault and resisting arrest.

Miles was awarded $101,016.75 in compensatory damages and $6,000 in punitive damages from each officer.

Joel Sansone, the attorney who represented Miles, is quoted as stating of the outcome of the case, “The only thing he wanted to hear was that these officers did the wrong thing… and he heard that in the courtroom today.”
