Chicago – An alderman from the Northwest Side of Chicago is seeking to legalize food carts in the city. As reported by the Chicago Tribune, Ald. Roberto Maldonado recently proposed charging vendors $100 annually as part of a plan to legitimize them, which the City Council is stated to have discussed for years.
Maldonado is quoted in the report as stating of food cart vendors, “They want to be able to set up and not worry about the police chasing them out…Why shouldn’t we embrace this entrepreneurship that’s been going on in Chicago for decades?”
Licensing carts has been a longstanding issue for restaurant operators who fear they would impact their business due to low overhead costs if legalized.
Maldonado stated he had yet to discuss his proposal with Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration regarding whether it would be supported by the mayor. The ordinance is set to be sent to the City Council License Committee.
