Florida – A Florida man was charged after impersonating a police officer, and pulling over a driver who turned out to be a real detective. As reported by Reuters, the man, Matthew McMahon, was caught after pulling over the detective Monday in the St. Augustine area of northeast Florida.
According to St. Johns County Sheriff’s officials, the detective became suspicious during the encounter, but did not make an arrest until further investigation. A warrant was subsequently issued for McMahon, who was arrested after going to the sheriff’s office to turn in the emergency lights he had been using. The detective who had been arrested reportedly by coincidence walked into the lobby while the arrest was being made.
Police spokeswoman Catherine Payne is quoted by Reuters as stating of the incident, “Once again, a chance encounter makes the arrest.”
McMahon, 20, was charged with impersonating an officer late Tuesday. He has been released on bail.
